What Is a Positional Shot?
A positional shot is an intentional play where you're not aiming for the green, but instead choosing to position the ball in a more favourable location for your next shot.
When Would You Hit a Positional Shot?
Common scenarios include:
- Laying up on a par 5 – You can’t reach the green in two, so you lay up to a comfortable distance for your third shot.
- Playing out of trouble – Your tee shot lands in a tough spot (e.g. trees or rough), and your second shot is a safe play sideways or back into the fairway.
Why Mark a Shot as Positional?
When you mark a shot as "Positional", it is excluded from your performance statistics, including:
- Approach stats
- Short Game stats
- Club distance averages
This ensures your data remains accurate and reflective of your true performance, without skewing averages with shots that weren’t intended as full attempts.
